Organic or natural shampoo: is its composition really better?

To take care of your hair, you want the best! It can happen that you hesitate between a natural shampoo and a conventional shampoo, to make your choice, you just have to compare the composition of the shampoos! why is organic shampoo better for the health of our hair? What are the ingredients to avoid? Focus on the composition of natural shampoo!

Natural Mild Shampoo

What is a natural shampoo?

In a natural shampoo, we forget: silicones, sulfate, parabens or even mineral oils and we say hello to mild surfactants generally derived from coconut or plants. In organic shampoos, there are natural compositions that pamper the hair, with ingredients such as: coconut oil, honey, aloe vera or even different plant extracts. Ingredients recognized for their properties for centuries, which can also be used at home in homemade organic hair care.

The composition of dry or solid shampoos

Solid shampoo: Unlike liquid shampoo, solid shampoo is made up of very little water (70% of liquid shampoo is made up of water). To be sure to choose a solid shampoo with the right composition, it needs: washing agents (in other words surfactants), vegetable oils, a powder generally derived from plants or minerals and essential oils.

Dry shampoo: The composition of a dry shampoo is a little more complicated, this is simply linked to its format and the challenges that the shampoo must take up (white marks, care action, etc.) In general, natural dry shampoo consists of: absorbent powders of plant origin (starch, corn, rice) moisturizing, absorbing or fortifying agents, essential oils for the perfume, and sometimes dyes to avoid white marks.

Which shampoos to avoid?

If you want a mild shampoo with a healthy composition that cleans while respecting the hair fiber, then there are a few ingredients that are generally found in classic shampoos available in supermarkets that you must banish from your hair products. .

Sulphates: present in most conventional shampoos, they are agents with foaming power. But sulphates are active detergents which can be aggressive and dry out the scalp.

Parabens: These are preservative active ingredients, even if they do not have any particular adverse effects on your hair, we do not really know if they have an impact on health. When in doubt, avoid!

Silicones: It is thanks to them that the hair looks shiny and soft... in appearance. Silicones are occlusive agents that surround the hair fiber and suffocate it. The hair is then no longer able to absorb the deep care.

Sulfate, parabens, silicones: how to analyze the composition of a shampoo?

To identify the ingredients that we do not want in a natural shampoo, we refer to theINCI list (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients), basically the list of ingredients present in our shampoo.

Sulphates:They are usually annotated as "sulphates" or "sulphates", usually followed or preceded by another word.

Silicones:They end in "xane", "cone", "conole" and can sometimes be annotated as "PEG"

Parabens: They are simply noted as "paraben" and are usually preceded by a name. For example: butyl paraben.

Surfactants in my shampoo, what are they ?

Surfactants are chemical compounds that make the link between aqueous matter and fatty substances. In a shampoo, the surfactants make it possible to lather the treatment. There are chemical surfactants, such as sulfate or betaine. And natural surfactants derived from sugar, vegetable oils or amino acids (usually obtained from coconut).

What is a shampoo with a good composition ?

There aren't really any strict rules to say that a shampoo has a good composition, it will mainly depend on what you are looking for in a shampoo. If you prefer the cleansing action of the scalp, then we turn to shampoos with purifying active ingredients such as clay for example. If you are looking for acare action, you should favor shampoos based on vegetable oils or butters. If you prefer a sensory shampoo, we choose a product composed of essential oils. Note: the longer the list of ingredients in your shampoo, the more likely it is to contain so-called "industrial" ingredients.

Misconceptions about natural shampoo

Natural shampoo does not wash

The main idea that we have of organic shampoo is that it does not wash well because it does not foam. Indeed, organic shampoos tend to lather less than conventional shampoos because they contain natural active ingredients that wash gently. But beware, that does not mean that organic shampoos wash less well! And yes, because in reality: the foam does not wash. It's a psychological factor, it doesn't add anything to the hair. But there is still progress on the side of green chemistry, now a good number of organic shampoos foam (even solid shampoos)!

Tip: if your organic shampoo does not lather well, you can try double washing or use a massage brush on the scalp to stimulate the lather. We always make sure to rinse well!

My hair is less beautiful when I use an ecological shampoo

It's a fact, the appearance of the hair can be different when you switch to organic hair care, but you have to go through it before you have beautiful, healthy hair. The transition between conventional shampoo and organic shampoo is like detoxifying the skin, you must first go through a purge stage. By eliminating the synthetic residues present on the surface of the hair, we discover what is hidden underneath... that is to say, greasy hair, dull or even brittle hair. But by showing a little patience we find the true nature of his hair after this time of adaptation.
