How a deodorant works?
A short history of deodorant
Ancient Romans and Egyptians were already concerned about masking their body odors, using essential oils, vegetable powders, incense ... The Romans even wore packets of herbs under their armpits!
The first "real" deodorant was invented by the American brand Mum in 1888, while theantiperspirant was invented by Everdry in 1903. But these products irritate the skin and stain clothes: in short, they are not very well developed ... It is only in the 1960s and 70s that the deodorant was popularized by various television spots to become the product we know today.
How does it work?
Perspiration is a natural phenomenon. Although uncomfortable, it is necessary for the proper regulation of body temperature and the evacuation of waste products from the body. It should therefore not be prevented, as is the case when using antiperspirants.
Sweat is composed of water, minerals and lactate. In itself, it does not smell bad: the people responsible for odours are the bacteria that feed on it.
Also, an organic deodorant can act in different ways:
- It can camouflage bad smells behind pleasant scents (perfumes, essential oils...).
- It can absorb sweat, preventing the multiplication of odorous molecules (thanks to vegetable or mineral powders).
- It may contain antibacterial or bactericidal substances, which prevent them from multiplying.
You will have understood it, it is healthier to act on the smell, rather than on the sweat itself!
Why choose an organic deodorant?
You have certainly heard about the controversy over the aluminum salts present in our deodorants.
Unfortunately, these substances are not the only ones to incriminate: let's take a closer look at the composition of a deodorant.
Dangerous ingredients in "classic" deodorants
Most "classic" deodorants contain harmful substances. Among the ingredients to avoid are :
- Parabens, such as propylbaraben or butylparaben, preservatives that act as endocrine disruptors.
- Silicones and their derivatives, such as cyclopentasiloxane, which also disrupts our hormonal system.
- Alcohol and synthetic perfumes, which are highly allergenic and should be avoided at all costs in the case of sensitive skin.
- Phenoxyethanol, a preservative to be avoided by pregnant women and young children.
- Highly flammable gases (butane, propane, isobutane) found in spray deodorants.
What about aluminum salts?
The dangerousness of aluminum salts is difficult to establish scientifically. Unfortunately, their harmlessness is not proven either! In fact, health authorities recommend limiting their use.
Present in antiperspirants - which we advise against using anyway - aluminum salts are suspected of being linked to breast cancer, Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. When in doubt, it is best to avoid these substances, especially on damaged skin (after shaving or hair removal, for example).
Are natural deodorants effective?
In view of their composition, we quickly realize that it is better to turn to organic deodorants, free of harmful substances.
But if you have never used natural deodorants or if you have been disappointed by one of them, you certainly wonder about their effectiveness. However, they are just as effective as classic deodorants: you will see, you may be bluffed by their action!
Composition of a natural and organic deodorant
The INCI list of an organic deodorant obviously varies from one product to another, and not all use the same active ingredients. But among the ingredients often found in natural deodorants, we can see :
- Baking soda: this is the main ingredient of many organic deodorants. It is incredibly effective in preventing the appearance of unpleasant odors, but unfortunately, some sensitive skins cannot tolerate it.
- Palmarosa essential oil: it is really THE reference of aromatherapy to regulate odors. Here again, you may be amazed by its effectiveness!
- Clary sage essential oil: it has the particularity of regulating perspiration, which is very interesting in case of excessive sweating.
- The arrow root: present in the vast majority of organic and natural deodorants, this starch leaves a silky touch and offers its matifying, absorbent and purifying properties for maximum performance.
Let's also mention lavender essential oil (antibacterial), witch hazel floral water (astringent, regulating), aloe vera (soothing, moisturizing),coconut oil (antibacterial), shea butter (nourishing), white clay (soothing, absorbent),zinc oxide (astringent and antibacterial) .
Thus, thanks to a clever combination of natural ingredients with complementary functions, organic deodorants are formidable with bad smells and have nothing to envy conventional deodorants.
